The designer did a good job of stylizing it(not as easy as it seems) while adding new touches to further distinguish it and incorporating the blast symbol and spikes into its design in creative ways. Call it ugly but it’s definitely not lazy, especially considering the franchise overall with stuff like my mom’s toucan, seal, bee fly, sheep, deer, dog, etc. Nothing against them though, not every design has to be some special unique groundbreaking thing. Plus the mata mata turtle is a fairly unique looking animal anyway so even if the design was actually 1:1 it wouldn’t be that bad. It’s not like someone just took a cat, painted it red, and called it a fire type.
