i'm thinking of starting to watch pokemon anime.
should i start with season 1 ep 1?
i only played fire red and platinum. also don't know any pokemon after gen 4.

Go for it, the main ones i suggest are first season, possibly second, sinnoh (at least the league and Paul fights), XYZ, and definitely sun and moon.

This could go two ways, pal(shaggy reference)
Ahem, so...
1) just watch Kanto, Sinnoh(labeled as Diamond and Pearl in accordance to the console games), Kalos (XY), and maybe SM if you won't like any of the above mentioned. If you don't care much for Pokemon, just watch Alola - Sun and Moon seasons without bothering about anything else.
2) or you could make the right choice and watch ALL more than 1000 episodes of it, including 22 movies, 3 spinoff seasons(Chronicles, Origins, Generations) a bunch of special stuff(Ranger episodes, Mega Evolution specials, Mewtwo Returns, Mystery Dungeon, main anime undubbed cameo episodes, and Pokemon Puzzle league for Nintendo 64, etc.) ... you should use Bulbaledia as a reference, you can find almost everything you need on Pokemon.Com and everything else on random sites. Pokemon has a lot of video content so you might as well enjoy it.

Watch it subbed for consistant VAs if you watch it all the way through. Even though peak Pokemon writing was American Dub Late Hoenn early Sinnoh it's jarring to hear voices change

Kanto and Orange Islands are must watch. Afterwards, use viewing guides and skip shitty fillers. Bulbapedo also categorized eps by prominent characters, so if you get to enjoy Misty/Brock/Team Rocket, you can skip to favourite eps.

Most importantly: try to look up subbed Japanese versions. The English dub, especially the TPCi/PUSA one, removes game music and changes voice actors for the worse.

Since you played Platinum, you might be interested in the Team Galactic arc from the DP series. Otherwise Sinnoh is a very filler-heavy region, so use viewing guides to not be disappointed. It's got some of the best battles in the show.

But he might have accidentally skipped those two seasons if I hadn't told him. They're both short and are pretty much altenative versions of the main anime, might as well count them in.(it would just be wrong not to mention them to a person interested in the Pokemon anime)

Anyway, both were made by different studios, and also have no relation to each other. Origins, though is, yeah, an alternate take on a Kanto adaptation. Since OP's main point of interest was FireRed, he might as well watch Origins, which reuses the same designs. Although the main series' Kanto arc has more of that "weird and untouched world" atmosphere of the early Pokemon media.
