So I bought Pokemon yellow on my 3DS and holy shit I fucking suck at it now. I'm currently at the elite four and I can't get passed the ice cunt. Can anybody give me any advice? I currently have:
Nidoking lvl 61
Haunter lvl37
Machoke lvl45
Venusaur lvl32
Slowpoke lvl32
Ponyta lvl28

I use to think Pokemon was easy as fuck when I was kid and now I'm struggling. Should I just keep grinding this team?

Gotta level out your levels there amigo. Pretty good type coverage, you’re just a bit underpowered. Getting a Rapidash will help. Level up slowpoke to slowbro too. Psychic is way OP and slowbro is an all time great.

How the shit did you end up with a Lv28 Ponyta and a two Lv32 Pokemon, including your starter, at the e4? All of your Pokemon should be Lv45 at the very least.

Vensaur isn't my starter, Pikachu was but I benched him for a Nidoran and Mankey at the start of the game. Nidoking is the one that's been carrying me.

You got a level 28 Ponyta, a level 32 Slowpoke, and your Venusaur just evolved? They’re gonna definitely need some training.

You remember the NPCs that talk about how you need to train up multiple Pokémon and not just one? You gotta take that to heart, that’s Nidoking is strong but he ain’t strong enough to shoulder everything. Slowbro will be a great asset once he evolves. He’ll destroy Bruno and most of Agatha too. Teach him ice beam and he’ll take down Lance easy too. You have Venusaur meaning Slowbro will be useful against your rival’s Charizard as well.

Most of your Pokémon don’t have a particularly good way of dealing with Lorelei. Rapidash may be good against ice but half her team is also water, and to top it off fire doesn’t resist ice in this generation. I’d teach Haunter thunderbolt (and evolve it preferably if you can) if you haven’t already used that TM somewhere.

You dun goofed, you don't rely on a single 'mon to carry you through the game. This is why having a balanced team is so important.

Great advice! Thanks! Last time I saw limpdik he had a Flareon so it really seems like Slowbro is gonna be my MVP in here. I might bench ponyta and my haunter doesn't know thunderbolt. I'll teach it to him.

Vena: razor leaf, poison powder, leech seed, vine whip

Haunter: lick, confuse Ray, night shade, hypnosis

Slowpoke, confusion, disable, headbutt, growl

Nido: body slam, blizzard, horn attack, double kick

Machoke: low kick, strength, focus energy, sesmic toss

Ponyta only knows ember.

Here’s a bit more advice. First and foremost, ditch focus energy on Machoke. It actually is glitched in gen 1 and decreases your crit chance instead of increasing it. Venusaur could stand to replace vine whip since razor leaf is also glitched in gen 1 and has an absurdly high almost guaranteed crit chance, it’ll perform better than vine whip every time. I don’t have any particular move in mind to replace it with however.

Of the 4 moves on that Slowpoke I recommend replacing growl with surf, and then probably disable for ice beam if you choose to go that route

Night shade does a set amount of damage that’s = to your level, meaning he’s only ever going to do 37 damage with that attack. Even if he levels up a lot, it will still not be doing much. I’d likely recommend replacing that one when you teach it thunderbolt.

Go catch a Dugtrio you can find them lvl 32 in Diglets cave. Dire Hit + Slash is almost guaranteed crits every turn in Gen1
Grab the Psychic TM from the dude in Saffron and slap Slowpoke with it ASAP. Surf and Psychic
Electrode from Power Plant or evolve your Eevee into Jolteon and Teach THAT thunderbolt
A Pidgeot/Fearow with either wing attack/drillpeck make swift work of Bruno with exception of his Onix
Slowbro trounces Agitha
Rest are just a cake walk granted you ahve a fair supply of revives and hyper potions

Okay OP here is some realistic advice.

Buy X items, give Nidoking a moveset with good coverage for the e4, and win. X attack with earthquake for lorelei, bruno and Agatha (speed if needed), x special with ice beam and thunderbolt for lance, and then whatever last move you want for the ones not covered. You can buy thunder and blizzard instead as well but you'll miss here and there. You'll need like 2 x attacks per battle. Easy

Slowbro is just as good as a Blastoise in most cases and Rapidash isn't a BAD replacement for Charizard, there's not much during E4 outside of Bruno where a Charizard has advantage over a Rapidash.to be fair

You can catch a Mankey well before that. It learns a fighting move at lvl 9.

The entire point of Yellow version is to have your Pikachu follow you around. Why would you go for Yellow and then not use that feature?

Just because a novelty is there doesn't mean you have to use it. Yellow also fixed a few glitches that the original Red and Blue had, extra encounters such as Team Rocket and slightly shifted pokemon appearances, and a set of gifted starter pokemon they wouldn't get otherwise

Either teach nidoking more elemental attacks or go catch zapdos. If nidoking knows earthquake, surf, ice attack game should be a cakewalk. Give zapdos fly and game is nearly done.
