The reason it’s a dragon is a very esoteric reason. There’s a Belgian play where one of the characters is named Tyltyl and he’s seeking a bluebird of happiness, which Altaria is according to its dex. Tyl is also a name for the star Epsilon Draconis in the constellation Draco.

The modern idea of dragons as only big, dinosaur-like reptilian things is actually fairly recent. Have you seen medieval art of dragons? They're all over the place. Some look like slugs, some look like rats, some look like scorpions but made out of mammal parts with weasel heads instead of claws. If anything, dragon-types don't get weird enough.

steel was weird to begin with, and then fairy seems inappropriate too. Just going by the design mawile would make a good Psychic/Dragon type. You may say dark fits but its personality isn't really malevolent, and fairy misses because it isn't particularly lucky. Dragon describes like arcane ferocity and psychic fits the sort of channeler look it has going on. Ghost would be cool too.

yeah I thought so too but Fairy and Dark sort of cancel out which is why Mawile doesn't seem to fit either type imo. Both are anyway pretty vaguely defined types so I guess it doesn't matter too much.

Why it was made a Steel type I can't fathom, but the Fairy type at least has some merit on Mawile. It's based on a youkai called a "futakuchi onna" (literally two-mouthed woman) that has a second mouth full of sharp teeth on the back of her head that's constantly hungry and trying to eat things. That said, I have no idea where you're getting Psychic/Dragon vibes from it. The only possibly draconic thing about it is the horn-mouth full of sharp teeth, but why Psychic of all things? Dark honestly would fit much better because of its nature as a deceiver.

Ninetales should have been retconned into fire/ghost a long time ago. Its movepool has been getting more ghostly since gen 4 and pretty much every single dex entry since the beginning talks about its supernatural and mystical nature or its grudges.

At the very least a kitsune is certainly more ghostly than the jellyfish, the laputean golem, the sandcastle, dancing bird and chunni owl.
