With a non-Japanese person on the designing team, he can provide input into what may be popular in different areas of the world, and it reflects in his designs. He didn't grow up with the same cultural world that the Japanese designers did and makes for more diversity. I'm not saying they're all perfect designs, but they're a breath of fresh air.
It also avoids incidents like in fangames where you can tell all of the Fakemon were designed by the same person.
