Protip: no, grinding is not a bad thing and it doesn't not become excessive when the EXP share is turned off.

pokemon is an rpgs with level, being at a lower level because of less exp income means you will have a harder time
Honestly, the always on exp is the most disappointing news of sword/shield for me so far
I like grinding, catch me inside iron island grinding with riley for way too long

This is true.
Even if you turn it off you can still make the game easier by caring for your mons in pokemon refresh.
RNG WILL make sure your mons heal themselves or give you a free Sturdy to endure the hit.
And then you get boosted exp anyway.

It doesn’t make the game easier if the game is balanced explicitly around having the EXP share always on.
Having few trainers per route, few pokemon per trainer, and few moves per pokemon; especially in the case of gym leaders/rivals/evil teams are part of the poor design that makes it easier.

Basically this. Making your team encounter higher level pokemon teams is an artifficial way of making the game "hard" instead of the enemy trainer carrying useful pokemon for example.

They balanced the games to fit both modes, with EXP share on and off. Now that they removed the ability to turn it off, do you REALLY think they are going to inject more difficulty to their preferred mode, or simply abandon the more difficult mode? Because it seems MUCH more likely that they have no interest in this magical balance people are talking about.

grinding is shit and exp share is fine if you balance around it.
the thing that makes pokemon so easy is that its a game for six year olds, not because it doesn't force you to walk around a grass patch for an hour.

This. It's a boring slog in a game like platinum for example when you catch a new member and have to vs. Seeker the same two trainers until you grind it 20 levels.

In the new games, there is just a sheer lack of trainers with good AI, movesets or teak variety. Not every npc needs to be good but basically no one takes advantage of the vast variety of game mechanics. Even gym leaders just stick to one sitrus berry, a coverage move and a couple higher level mons
