A trend as far as the color pallete... Less bright colors. Spikes... Stalagtites are found underground where it is dark. Aversion to rainbow content... Rainbows are generally emergent from light. Only likely to smile at the thought of you taking damage as a Pokemon... There are those that function that way, ignorant of how their minds are and what drives it in general, the nature of their minds is dark. I don't really know on this one. I thought I knew more before being asked. Only lesson learned, avoid questions, indefinitely. lol Knowledge is a threat, pure fact. It's a behavioral type, not elemental like your favorite JRPG with its own uber ambiguous "dark" type. Sneaking, mischievous activity, biting, pranking, demoralizing, beating up. It's called "Evil" in Japanese. "Dark" is what we did in English, and that's why fools get confused and say "Where's LIGHT TYPE?!"!

It's evil. Sinister. Fighting unfair.
Dark moves include things like biting, sucker punching, knocking items out of your enemy's hand, stealing, chasing enemies who try to run away, using your opponent's strength against them, using your whole team to gang up on your opponent, etc.
It's not about literal darkness, although using darkness to your advantage does fall in line with the theme of using cheap tricks.

The closest would be Fighting-type, as a lot of Pokemon in this type are extremely valiant, protective, and strong. (Steadfast, which mostly Fighting-types get, is known as Valiant Heart in Japanese.) Swords of Justice are all Fighting-type.

Dark is actually the 'evil' type, and fairy is the 'good' type, fairy doesnt really mean literal fairys and dark type doesnt have anything to do with coloration or anything like that

The "Evil" in " あくタイプ" is more related to darkness and "The evil has come" than "John doe is an evil guy". I don't know how to explain that because in English is just evil, but languages as Portuguese differs both words as well (Mau and Mal).

Just look at the moves Dark type has! Knock Off, Sucker Punch, Pursuit, Taunt... it's the type of dirty tricks and cheap tactics.

The most descriptive name for this type would be "type:Asshole", but obviously you can't do it in a children's game.
Basically, tricks and "unfair" style of fighting. Think kick in the balls, or finger in the eye in irl fight.
At least that's how i view dark type.

It's not just one thing. It's a collective of various ideas. Those ideas don't necessarily fit together or mean the same thing, but I think it's best to think about why is x mon dark type rather than thinking dark must mean a specific thing.

I think the only Pokemon that doesn't really belong is Alolan Grimer/Muk. Nothing about them is evil and it's not like Absol where humans perceive them as a menace. In fact it's the opposite: they're beloved for helping out with pollution. Is it because they're gluttonous? That can't be since Snorlax and Gumshoos are also defined by their gluttony. They get ravenous if they're starved? Sounds like any animal.

I guess the real reason is they gained teeth and Bite/Crunch are Dark-type.
