Why would the Japanese name matter if he's changing the English name only? Like the same argument for Butterfree being a venonat Evo is fair since there may be Japanese lore reasons in their line's names that justify the current evolutions but like he's not changing the Japanese names of flygon and salamence

If he changes Salamence's name to Flygon then what does Flygon become? It's called that in both languages, you'd need a new name to justify a theory that resulted from a coincidence.

Well how about that, you learn something new everyday

Well anyway it wouldn't be the first time they changed a Japanese name that is a simple English one transliterated, see Eevee evos, legendary birds, etc
