Gen 6 was the slap to the face that started the decline.
GO was the knife that made the wound that got a tremendous infection - normalfags who hadn't played pokemon since RBY.
GO made so much money from those who hadn't played since Kanto that Kanto-pandering has infected everything after it.

Stop, it hurts. I wished I did not have to keep my GBA at home to avoid having it stolen and smashed (again). Or that I never had to keep my maintained interest in Pokemon as a hobby a secret. The point is, "Go" wants to Catch 'Em All, especially Mew, who's a prominent Story Quest Pokemon in GO.
And in the future, you'll only be able to Catch 'Em All in GO thanks to the culling in the core titles.

The anime was created to create optimal conditions for Gold & Silver to release under. The games ended up being delayed, but they got lucky and the anime was popular enough to continue.

Basically, the anime saved their asses by buying them time with the Orange Islands arc.

That's also why Ho-Oh and Togepi appeared in Kanto; to get people hyped for Gen 2.
