Differences between generations

Setting aside debates about KANTOOOOOO and whether gen 1 Pokemon are over used, I've got a question that's been bothering me. Pokemon design aesthetic has dramatically and intentionally shifted to look more cartoony, and the logic is that this appeals to kids today more. I'm not a huge fan of the design shift, but whatever, times change. But then they also bring back Kanto mons every chance they get, and it seems to me that this would be a problem for their target younger demographic if the new designs appeal to them so much more. This says to me that there'd be some fruitful design space if they did more new pokemon in older styles. Am I completely off base here?
