Terrible example, OP.
If anything ruined the line for Popplio fans, it was how feminine the line ended up being and Brionne was already so feminine that Primarina shouldn't have any extra impact. Primarina also caused a significant turnaround in popularity for the line, where a lot of people did a 180 to claiming that they always loved Popplio both in and out of /vp/.

Primarina was good in battle, it was a shock to some, but it didn't damage the trio for me, they are all good and usable.

As for Gen 5 starters? Boxed as soon as something better appeared.

In my opinion they should be 50/50 as well as all other pokemon, that don't have in-lore explanation for different ratios.
