gen 5 was the beginning of the end. It's when they decided that Pokemon should become a story-based game.
They pulled it ok in gen 5, but it's that design philosophy that killed the franchise in the subsequent games.

Gen 3 was the start of the formula rehash. I must admit they refined this formula to a polished peak in Platinum, HGSS and BW2 but they never learned to do anything truly new.

Gen 4 was where the story based stuff started to creep up with the mythical god pokemon and the cinematics in platinum. Black and White's problem was that it railroaded it too much I agree, but they took a step back and made it a tinier bit less linear in BW2. By XY though they had gone full retard.

I want to say it started with this faggot. With Gen 5-2's shift to a generic iPod future aesthetic and philosophy that sought to simplify and streamline nearly everything about the series, right down to its characters and plot. But no, you know what it was?

It was Gen 3 where the change was first evident, but it wasn't full swing until BW2. The problem was GameFreak with its baby tier utopianism. "Pokemon are great and our friends and always wonderful! As long as we have Pokemon the world is beautiful and perfect and everyone is happy all thanks to Pokemon and people living in harmony!" it became a Fisher Price playset instead of a box of cool dinosaur toys. It just kept getting worse as they simplified the motivations and philosophies of every single person and idea involved with the series until it was nothing but a feelgood friendfest where conflict is scary and nobody's really bad.

I share this sentiment wholeheartedly, though I feel like your concept of timing is a little off. Gen III moved toward this direction (though it didn't feel worse for it), but gen IV moved away, though the art style degraded heavily between the two. Gen V-2 did indeed culminate in the worl you describe, though.

I always felt the earlier games had more of a realistic grounded world to them (at least as far as it can with magic lightning spitting animals and shit,) but I could never pinpoint the exact turning point until this post.
