Practically EVERY series panders to the same few group of characters. Mario always focuses Mario/Luigi/Peach/Bowser, Zelda always focuses on Link/Zelda/Ganon, Sonic always focuses Sonic/Tails/Knuckles, Mega Man always focuses on the classic series, Transformers always focuses on Optimus Prime/Megatron/Bumblebee, etc

Pokemon fans are just the only ones underage and retarded enough to whine about the pandering because they deluded themselves into thinking the generation -they- grew up with is just as important as Gen 1, when it isn't.

Because Kirby is an even more braindead franchise than Pokemon. They managed to create a series so utterly devoid of any meaning and thought that they're able to just continually pump out the same game over and over and over again and the fans not only aren't angry, they're absolutely thrilled. Can you imagine the utter fury there would be if you didn't fight Whispy Woods at the start of every Kirby game? I can already see the countless reviews calling it soulless.

That isn't the case with Pokemon. Pokemon doesn't focus on the same characters every game, most of the current fanbase didn't grow up with Gen 1, so every generation of fans is nostalgic for a different set of characters. But Game Freak only panders to one group, the group doesn't even play Pokemon anymore.

Kirby is commited to pure and honest fun and is simple and wholesome even by Nintendo standards. Everybody knows what they're getting with Kirby. It's not going to piss you off with hardcore challenges, it's not going to overload your eyes with intense graphics, and it's not going to bog you down with its desire to be viewed as interactive art. as a fan of both franchises:
kirby games are consistently good, unlike pokemon's, so there's less cynicism in general. when kirby tried to nostalgia-pander with star allies, it gave fair representation to multiple eras of the franchise, not just one era.
kirby games are character-driven, which is why it makes sense for king dedede to keep showing up. in contrast, pokemon is all about exploring new regions and collecting a wide variety of monsters, which is why it's so off-putting when kanto, charizard and pikachu are shoved in our faces for decades at the expense of everything else.
on a side note: one of the biggest complaints from kirby fans is how sakurai favors his games in smash over shimomura and kumazaki's games, so it's not entirely different.

The biggest complaint from Kirby fans is that they haven’t moved on from the Return to Dreamland engine since this started, but that’s also expected to change with the way Star Allies handled.
Also, there’s no competitive or collecting aspect of Kirby outside of speedrunning. It’s a game you play to enjoy as you go with the extra challenge coming from how much you wanna go for 100%.

The issue isn't simply that kanto is still there, it's that there's not even really any point in hoping or wondering that they might work with the other 650 designs to create something interesting. It's knowing that, since your favorite isn't from kanto, it will never get anything special. Kanto isn't just something that's always there, it's always the MOST important thing. Everything else is second fiddle. Or no fiddle.

I think comparing the two in this way is a bit unfair because of how additions to the series are managed. Dedede isn't reviled, because he's a main, recurring character. He's more comparable to each region having a professor at the start of the game. Nobody really hates them as far as I'm aware, they're just always kind of there to kick things off.

Pokemon expectations:
>100+ new Pokemon, new mechanics to add to and differentiate from previous gens without completely breaking the current gameplay, new characters, a new story completely from scratch with its own lore, balancing for competitive play

Kirby expectations:
>A few new enemies or variants based on the setting and/or context, story building off existing canon (if it even needs to), some new fun mechanics that might completely change how the game is played (e.g. Canvas Curse)

Kirby games also don't really have 'nostalgia' to pander in the same way Pokemon does, since the cast is smaller and always familiar. It'd be like saying having Goombas in a new Mario game is 'nostalgia pandering'.

It's especially noticeable with Pokemon because it's a multimedia franchise and the only the games do this. The anime doesn't pander to Kanto. The manga doesn't pander to Kanto. The TCG doesn't pander to Kanto. Yet for some reason the games still feel the need to do it when the first of the franchise has proven that it can do just fine without it.

They've only announced those Gigantamax forms, it's pretty shortsighted to assume other Pokemon aren't getting them. Tyranitar and Kommo-o seem pretty guaranteed since they're doing that Dynamax Crystal promotion with the double pack, and you're more likely to get a Pokemon capable of Gigantamaxing out of a Max Raid.

You can just "beat" a Kirby game quite easily, yeah, but it takes a lot of time and skill to find everything and 100% it.

Whoever made this post is oblivious to the fact that he knows why "kanto pandering" exists. It's so that no matter which generation someone grows up with, they at least have some familiarity with the original 151 Pokemon. Whether they started in gen 1, gen 3, or gen 6, they were all exposed to the Kanto Pokemon in one way or another. Instead of having to constantly juggle catering to fans of every generation, they can just focus on the universal generation and making sure new fans also share that common ground. Even if someone's first game is gen 8, they'll know Pokemon like Charizard, Eevee, Butterfree, and Meowth just like every Pokemon fan that's come before them.

That's not what I asked. Neither game has any reason to include these characters, since new pokemon players playing ss as their first game likely won't be aware that Charizard is actually older than they are and new kirby players won't recognize king dedede or meta knight at all. It's more for the series veterans than anything else, which is why I was asking what makes pokemon fans so tired of nostalgia pandering but kirby fans so accepting of it.

The "New Super Mario Bros" line of games got pretty heavily criticized for just being the same shit over and over with a new gimmick added to each game. Go read some reviews of NSMB2 and see how much people liked the fact that it's basically NSMB1 with new levels... but now there's coins EVERYWHERE!

For some reason, out of the hundreds of powers, the first four get most of the attention, they get new recolors, tons of merchandise depicting Kirby using those four powers again and again. Suddenly a new Kirby game comes out, adding a few more powers, but now the first four have even more attention, including new colors for the explosions, and a spike move that's bigger than the original spike move, etc.
Now we're 8 games and a fuckton of spinoffs down the road, and those four powers have more merchandise, more attention, more screentime in the Kirby anime, etc. than 99% of the rest of the powers.
Excuse the odd analogy.
For real, though, Gen 1 is unironically my least favorite gen, and I'm a 30 year old who started with Pokemon Blue.
I hate that Gen 1 gets so much attention, I wish they'd share the love around with some of the other gens.

Outside of the first level or two of each game (which is almost always a very narrow selection,) you get a pretty wide variety of powers to choose from, old AND new, and most of the marketing is almost exclusively the base Kirby.
AND my analogy assumes this hypothetical Kirby game has hundreds of powers, not the 15 or so they currently do.
