New Battle mechanics in Pokemon typically stuck around or saw iteration. Then they decided during the 3DS era that every new game should be defined by gimmicks instead.

Triple Battles caused something resembling strategy because of being only able to target adjacent Pokemon. Similarly Rotation had a larger pool of options available and more direct prediction. A shame it kills the performance.
