That's because it was the worse gen up until that point. Literally the only reasons people like it now is nostalgia and the fact that all the games after it sucked even worse.

Anon, we still had WEST KANTOOOOO and Hoenn, the series didn't get good until Gen 4 and 5.

ORAS being the best selling remake killed it harder

Pretty much proved to GF they can put in as low effort as possible with a rushed 1 year release and be REWARDED for it

Pretty sure the only reason so many normie fans hate gen 5 was the lack of Hoenn remakes, the three or four objectmons, and wanting to agree with the crowd. It's sad because those games had a shit ton of content both pre and post game.
