I'll tell you why Kanto sells. Because GameFreak is consistently pushing and pandering to it. Despite being the most bland region, constantly revisiting it has brainwashed you zoomers into loving it more than your debut gen.

How can someone hate Kanto but like Kalos and Alola when those two regions can't stop dick sucking Kanto? You can't. You're a neu genwunner, brainwashed by GameFreak into loving a game and region that debut 10 years before you were born.

That's not even an applicable comparison because Mario and Zelda have changed by leaps and bounds from their respective beginnings and reccuring themes, characters and items often come from later entries in their series for example Bowser, fire flowers, the master sword and Zelda's musical theme all came later.

Except it isn't only gen 1 getting pandered to. Popular monsters in other gens get callbacks too. The ace for X/Y's champion was Gardevoir. Rotom a gen 4 pokemon is one of the most consistently shilled of all. It's not about gen 1 vs other gens it's about popular Pokemon vs unpopular. What /vp/ wants is for unpopular Pokemon to get a lot of attention and focus which makes no sense business wise. The people here are just contrarians.

I already stated it. Mega Evolutions are fine. But you forgot that All regional variants in Alola are Kantomons. Malie City, a town CLEARLY inspiried by Johto (to the point where you received the Apricorn Balls) still unnecessarly added constant Kanto references and call backs to it. Outside of the new Pokemon (in Alola), the only ones that got exclusive Z-moves were Kantomons.

And it looks like its most likely going to be the same, as Gigantamax are seemingly only going to new mons and Kantomons, and outside of Zigzagoon, regional variets look like they're just going to be Kanto again.

You know what would be nice? If those Johto starters, you know. Those Pokemon that are popular on their own right since people keep bringing them up got some recgonition from Game Freak. Why can't they get a Gigantamax for or hell, even a regional variant to really mix things up. There is no extreme; no one is asking for Boffulant or Skunktank to get their own Gigantamax forms or whatever. People want to see a semblance of balance when it comes to implementing new gimmicks in a new game.

FrLG is a remake. Remakes all sell around the 12m -14m range. So it didn't really fail. LGPE is watered down remake with only Kanto mons and on a new platform. Still sells 10m copies. Also LGPE costed 60 bucks contrary to 40 since its on a main platform.

Seeing as most other games sell around 15 means that LGPE brought in the same amount of money.

Kanto sells because its Pokemon designs are flat out superior to new gen designs. That's it.
The Pokemon actually look like animals for the most part and don't deviate from overall design too heavily. The designs are simple yet unique. There's no ice cream Pokemon, garbage Pokemon, sandal Pokemon or whatever the fuck retarded shit they are coming out with these days.
There's no stupid gimmick like Gigantimax.

People like elegance and simplicity of design that still provides a challenge. Exact same reason people like Classic WoW over current retail WoW.
