So I understand that this abomination was created so Ash didn't need a Mega Pokémon.

But my question is... Why couldn't Ash have a mega? He had Charizard, Pidgeot, Heracross and Sceptile, and they could still keep Alain and have a Charizard X Vs Y rivalry.

So... Why?

Essentially, the director wanted to do something special to highlight Ash and Greninja’s “bond”. So they went to GF and the designed the form.

Like I said earlier, the director had a bad habit of doing crap like this to make Ash seem more special then really is.

Yajima can't just pull something out of ass and put it in the episode, it needs to be accepted by the higher ups and his team. Such Decisions are taking unanimously. Now why would I deny the obvious? I'm a dawnfag myself but you need to understand that their relationship was more like siblings and best friends. Serena was never a friend, she's supposed to be a love interest and if you've seen a lot of anime you'd know that Japan treats the two very differently. In the end, it's just subjective which relationship you prefer

Only if you hate amourshipping and that's basically an opinion, not a fact. Hard agree with the rest of your post, though. If they never had the guts to make them a couple then they should not went with Romance angle in the first place. But you can't just deny the fact that it happened and yajima's words in the interview were pretty explicit with how you are supposed to interpret the scene. Even if you don't like Serena and her crush, she is the Endgame (whenever that happens)

As for "romance", they were in the games from long ago. You as a PC end up getting a sneaky idol as a love interest in B2W2, and they had the Shauna thing in XY, May/Brendan for ORAS, and arguably Lillie. Hell, Gen 2 has you crashing Misty's date with some literal who.

Literally what logic are you using? If you put May, Dawn and Serena in one episode obviously Serena will take more screentime because she's the love interest. After ash, she's the second priority for the writers. And this ain't me, it's basic writing 101. The hero and his love interest always take higher priority than side characters.

Yeah, just like how Hinata got a ton of focus or Chi-Chi. Serena is a satellite love interest. Dawn and May, especially Dawn were given more priority.

Thinking about it from the perspective of the writers/animaters, I would assume the main reason was so they didn't have to add a Mega Bracelet to Ash's design when he'd only have a handful of Pokemon he'd be able to use it with. Especially when they wouldn't always be on him.

It's not a retcon at all, it's just what happens when the trainer and Mega Evolution don't have a sufficiently strong bond. Note that fairly early on in the XY anime, Korrina's Lucario went berserk after it Mega Evolved for the first time because the both of them lacked the capability to control its power.
