Thank fuck, I'm in a inority of players that actually enjoyed Sun and Moon, but the first fucking 8 hours were plagued with that shit.

Not like that. The game allows you to enter high-level zones that are meant for mid-late game characters, so you could be a poor newbie trainer with Lv. 11 Sobble and Lv. 9 Woolo and face off against some monster with fully evolved Lv. 50 mons. You probably won't be able to move through the story non-linearly like in a true RPG, but it's still a huge step up for Pokémon where you're always gated from doing content that may pose a challenge because a kid might get spooked
