I just don't understand why they bothered wasting time with making completely new designs when they already had some. I don't think anyone would question it if they looked the same but functioned differently.

Yeah right. If they hadn't done new designs it would have added more fuel to the "gamefreak is lazy" fire.
I'm not saying I like gigantimax or think gamefreak isnt lazy, but at least we got some new designs
