That means, after choosing it and being prompted to Nickname your Starter, you'll see if it's Shiny. All of the Gen 7 games functioned like this and the same implementation looks to be in SwSh.

Are you sure you can check if it is shiny before you select it? In SM and USUM, the starter Pokemon retain their normal coloration during the selection cutscene, and it is only when you have the option to nickname it that you can tell if it is Shiny or not.

You could save before picking in Gen 7, the problem was sit through long-ass cutscenes before you can check if it's shiny. Gen 8 resolved this problem
