I was thinking a lot about this recently, how much of a waste the 3DS Pokemon games were. In order to be 3D, they had to make models of every Pokemon, and in order to not make that workload a waste of time, they made them super high poly to "future proof." Clearly that effort was for nothing, as they are cutting Pokemon from the newer games.
So now I have to wonder, what was the point? The games on the 3DS already look dated, and don't have that timeless look that 2D Pokemon games Gen 3-5 do. Plus they run like shit.
What they should have done was continued the way of Gen 4/5 with 2D characters sprites but add 3D elements to the world. Imagine all the Pokemon, 2D but not pixelated like before... more like moving Ken Sugamori drawings (front and back sprite) sort of like the Paper Mario aesthetic. It sure would have made the games run better, look better in the long run, and hell the 3D effect could have been great and not just something we keep off constantly.
If they went a bit more simple with the 3DS titles, they could have had nicer looking games, easier to make, and they wouldn't be forced to use the static lifeless models they have now. I think they bit off more then they could chew and they are stuck with the result even to this day.
What do you think? By the way, I don't hate the 3DS titles, the first time I played them I thought they were fun. I don't really feel the urge to replay them ever again though
