Well mega evolution was awesome, but they quit with it and did Z-Moves which where ok at most, but now they are doing Dynamax/Gigantimax, which has too many limitations so it’s pretty much pointless.
They should have kept going on with what worked the best.

Agree, garbage like the Pokewalker, the Underground and non-transferable Pokemon were garbage that only dragged the series down.

Megas were the best mechanic added since Abilities though and only zoomers too young to remember the Pokegods disagree.

I remember being late to the game with Gen VI because I took a bit of a break from the franchise after I played B/W, and seeing Megas for the first time was a really underwhelming thing for me. I’m fine with them now, but from an ‘outside’ perspective it was looking like Pokémon was becoming desperate

Megas were functionally an expansion to the roster of Pokemon, which is what people really care about. The new designs, new models, new stats, new Abilities, etc. It spawned all kinds of fanwork and speculation about their favorites, talking about which Pokemon should get one next. And some of them, like Beedrill, Mawile, Pinsir, etc. drew in new attention and fans for 'mons that nobody cared about raising previously.

Should've just scrapped z-moves and kept megas for Galar. Instead of these new gigantamax forms we could've gotten new megas.
