It's part of its core identity and the base of every game.
Now imagine Pokemon as a worldwide game, set in different areas, the first happened to be Australia, where you saw some really nice kangaroos. That was a nice experience! Time to go on an African safari next, but ah.. suddenly there are kangaroos, because the first one had them and everyone likes kangaroos, right? You wanted to see lions, that's why you specifically came to Africa? No, I bet you wanted more kangaroos. I mean, you did like them back in Australia!
Now you're going to China to see the pand- oh, there are kangaroos. But this was supposed to be a trip around the world to see all these unique animals and yet you keep seeing kangaroos. Sure, there are some mega kangaroo fanatics who for some reason don't see anything bad with this, but there's something clearly wrong, you came for the pandas!
