game critics are a hyping tool used by the marketing departments for major publishers
they conform to the publishers and then the fanboys who comprise 90% of their audience, hence why they always gloss over any Nintendo game and give them ridiculously inflated review scores, because the fans are uniformly autistic and hold grudges like no other, like the one Zelda 8.8 review
it's the exact same with their approach to sony fans, utter drivel like naughty dog's modern output are hailed as the zenith of "adult" gaming for very shallow reasons, because the game critic circles know full well that the PS4 is the dominant console globally and that their userbase are most likely to own them and continue clicking on articles and skipping to the review score if they continue seeing 9+ scores, generating the precious advertising revenue, which is more often than not, something vaguely game-related they've already given an arbitrary 8 or 9 that month
Occasionally they'll pick one or two games from the lineup to review genuinely to recover some of their ebbing credibility for that year, generic sony zombie game perhaps being the big recent example. Though as expected, there's always the 5-6 platform-specific sites; Nintendoaids, Playstationdrone, etc. that exist solely to cater to these audiences and inflate aggregated review scores even further beyond any modicum of genuine usefulness to the consumer
