The plot really fucking decimated these games. I couldn't give a shit about mommy issues or Nebby or any of the ultra beast shit. Imagine a Sinnoh-like plot in Alola, where the focus is solely on the Island Guardians and Solgaleo and Lunaala. You could even do some research into the island trials at Malie Library, end up teaming up with Hau to take down a competent evil team who want to use the box legendaries for their evil plot. I know it's nothing new and it's still kinda shit but it would have been way fucking better than the weird shit we got. They didn't nail anything about the plot at all, but the region had so much potential

Alola is a comfy Region with some nice world building, and it's all spoiled by constant interruptions, terrible pacing, and an overemphasis on human drama. I don't think Ohmori quite understands what makes Pokemon fun.

I'm somewhat of the opposite opinion, I was okay with the plot because it wasn't focused on saving the world, but on some girl's crazy mom losing her shit. I prefer plots that are more limited in scope for pokemon, because otherwise I get tone whiplash when a 10 year saves all time and space with a team of magic pigeons

Nah. It was boring as shit and super hand holdy until the second island. Wasn't a fan of the soundtrack either. Felt like I was going through a life story of Lillie and Gladion the entire game. Didn't feel like Pokémon to me at all. Can't wait for the new games, the soundtrack already sounds dope and for some reason Sword and Shield feel more Pokémon-like to me since the last generation. Only thing that I'm sketched out about is that Marnie bitch. She better not become the Lillie of the Galar region.

sm had a decent story but there was so much focus on lillie you might as well should have played as her. being the bystander made the whole playthrough really annoying. regions empty as fuck too.
the character designs are really nice though and the mons are really fitting to the regions setting.
usm is a hot pile of shit.

As bad as SwSh looks, there is no way in hell it'll be worse than the Alola games. To be brutally honest with you, I think even Sonic '06 was leagues more enjoyable to play than SM/USUM.

now XY... i just booted up my X again to check on my old mons after like 4 years of not touching it and even just walking around felt weird. 3D but could only go in 8 directions

It was good, but in hindsight gen 7 should have debuted on the Swtich. They could have easily made Z in 2017 to give the 3DS a proper send-off with a complete region, and spent the extra time polishing the new art style as they made the jump from handheld to console. Going from the chibi overworld in Kalos to Alola was such a huge shift compared to Alola to Galar, which just feels like the same thing in HD. The gameplay itself wouldn't need any major changes, just the engine and interface to make it single screen friendly and making the cutscenes/tutorials skipable. No one would be asking for open world at that point or bitching about non-random encounters. Dexit wouldn't be a thing - even though those games didn't have the national dex you could still play with any pokemon which is the real reason everyone sperged out. The reviews would have been 10/10 everywhere. Then release LGPE afterward to cash in on the GO craze without sacrificing your first Switch game on a cheap dumbed down remake.

SM pretty mediocre
USM were pretty great but because the first half of the game is still basically SM with the same flaws it just comes off as bad.
if USM was first Gen 7 game it would have been pretty good but becuase its a rehash game its pretty meh.

That's the worst thing about the games, they're all one and done routes that you don't need to go back through again because there's nothing new to explore later on.

No you have your shitty island trial, you make friends with hau and lillie, suddenly lillie is kidnapped and you try to help her.
You saw lillie only that much because you should feel „oh no ma friendu ririe-chanu needsu helpu“ that‘s why she also leaves at the end, because you should be like „goodbyu rirrie-chanu itu wasu greatu, gonna missu yu“

Alola music was the best.
Trial and Kahunas were a good welcome change to gym challenges. Totems provide a challenge in the early half of the story versus prior games.
It's just that after Akala Island things take a 360 turn to you being a witness to Lillie's family drama and the island challenge being muted.

Like really? Battle Nanu in the docks?
Have Mina's trial inside her house?
One island dedicated to a victory road, and another victory road in Lanakila? Everything felt barren.

Oh, I hate the fact that its so difficult to get Alolan-mons with their low spawn rate.

Overall Alola's a meh for me.
Unova and Kalos had more flavor, its just that they're too linear, and they're too easy.

I tried playing them when they first came out and quit once I got to the second island.
I've started playing Sun for the first time since then and I've come to realize it's immensely more enjoyable when you simply start mashing the A button as fast as possible any time Lily shows her ugly mug or when you're forced into a cutscene; now it actually feels like I'm almost going on an island adventure that is my own.
I god damn love tropical islands and the ocean; they could have made this region so bloody good and instead they decided to put their focus on boring characters instead of exploration.
When the games transitioned to 3D they should have abandoned the concept of routes and instead tried to make things more open and Alola was the perfect chance for them to do this since unlike other regions that are set in much larger environments where they're forced to be more restrictive as to where players can go, Alola was already naturally restrictive because the region is just a bunch of small islands and this could have been used advantageously to shove a ton of interesting stuff and allowed it to be open ended instead of linear. This would have allowed SM to avoid the problem most openworld games have of being too large and filled with nothing.
Literally the perfect opportunity and they wasted it.
