Stellar. You can actually feel power coming off of these designs. Only the Hoenn starters come close to being a high quality group of starter Pokemon.

1=3=4 (more or less, really best trio starters in the series) > 2>7>5>6 (all really close in terms of not being as good as the first three though)

Yes, I was thinking about this the other day, I picked turtwig, but a friend once traded me a piplup and a chimchar for I dont remember what, but when I reached the elite four with all 3 and holy shit that was fucking fun. Easily top 2 with Gen 3 having 3 starters that were all my favorite at one point.

Not really? Torterra is a quadraped that fully evolves at level 32, and that's all it has in common with Venusaur. Empoleon isn't like Blastoise at all and Infernape is more like Blaziken for obvious reasons than anything else.

Torterra is a reptile-like tetrapod with a plant growing out of its back. Empoleon is a bipedal aquatic animal that gains machine-like characteristics (steel type and blade wings vs. blastoise's cannons). And Infernape is a lot like Blaziken.

Gen 3 will always hold a special place in my heart. I too thought that all three starters in that game were cool as fuck, surprisingly I ended up picking Torchic last, because as a young lad I didn't know that Hoenn would have so many water types.

I used torchic last as well, however, with peck and fighting type moves, it came in handy for a large portion of gym battles, team battles, and e4 fights.

Like Paul's Torterra. It never moved an inch when battling Ash, but it was a tough Pokemon using a good mix of long range and short range attacks.

It would use its massive size to create earthquakes, and huge shield to resist attacks while throwing razor sharp leaves and vines around.

I wouldn't call them bad designs, but with their typing they have no business being starters. The Grass starter shouldn't lose its resistance to Water, nor should the Water starter lose its resistance to Fire. It's also fucked that one starter is able to pull STAB type advantage over BOTH of the other two.

The only issue I really see with this is Empoleon being unable to hit Torterra super effectively with a STAB move, while Infernape can hit Empoleon supereffectively, and Torterra can hit Infernape supereffectively.

Gens 1/2: ace fucking designs and evolution lines
Gen 3: amazing first and last forms, middle forms are meh on the whole
Gen 4: pretty good, but a little weaker overall
Gen 5: oh shit nigger what are you doing
Gen 6: better than gen 5, but not as good as gen 4
Gen 7: start out pretty good, have decent mid stages, and then despair in the final stages

I also really like the trident crown evoking an image of Poseidon, ruler of the seas. Which fits in with Infernape aping Sun Wukong, legendary Chinese figure, and Torterra representing Akupara the World Turtle (why does grass/ ground fucking suck as a typing, I want to use you Torterra but I don't know how)

Samurott is already anthro though, just not to the ridiculous extent of later starters.
What people complain about is the fact that it's one instance where it makes perfect sense for the Pokémon to have a humanoid stance, and yet it doesn't have it. The fact that it has boring typing, stats, and abilities doesn't help it at all either.
