Added to the mix are elevations (for example, most Water type attacks gain an attack bonus if targets are at lower elevations than the caster), and interactable battlefield objects (like breakable / explosive objects, switches, conveyor belt, locked doors, etc.). You could even incorporate alternative victory criteria (such as activating all switches to open a door and make it through the other side, holding a flag on the opponent's side of the battlefield for a certain number of turns, or preventing the opposing team from advancing past a certain point).
