Ash's XY team was pretty basic in terms of the types Ash regularly got aside from Greninja being part-Dark, and Goodra and Noivern being Dragon-type (part in Noivern's case). And two of those Pokemon are released now so they don't count that much anymore.
With Naganadel leaving next week though, Ash still has a more diverse team than before.

Meltan evolving to Melmetal was due to its friends combining with it which was spurred from Rowlet getting help from its family, so technically it is good progression.
Poipole spent about 50 episodes by itself training off-screen and evolved that way. It didn't just evolve at SM140. Still, Ash had no role in raising it, so it felt like Ash just borrowed it for the league. (But then again Kukui borrowed Tapu Kek for the league, so it's an even match.)
