Completely putting aside the actual graphical quality for a moment, Sword and Shield's art direction is also completely abysmal and that's the main reason it looks so bad compared to other games.

This. It looks objectively worse than even the gamecube games because of the horrendous artstyle, and those looked bad even back then. The only reason Zelda/Mario/Dragon Quest look great on the Switch is because their respective artstyles are cleverly minimalistic and cartoonishly beautiful. Pokemon just looks like a fucking grey and brown mess. It will age worse than Twilight Princess.
