so from what I can tell the dynamax crystals are used to trigger the special raid battles for version exclusives (larvitar is normally shield exclusive but this lets you get it in sword and vice versa for jangmo-o) but I don't think you need them for raid battles in general but I have no clue

Very good point, G-Max Zard will still just have Blaze and the quad weakness to rocks. I hope the residual damage from its Max move is high to compensate

You don’t need to hold the item to dynamax, you need the crystal to initiate the battle. Think of them as raid passes in Pokémon go.

No, everyone is getting this shit wrong, these dynamax crystals let you battle these specific pokemon early, that's all. Because when you see the light available for a raid you dont know what you'll be going against but this crystal makes sure you battle this pokemon

Larvitar for sword jangmo for shield. Cause they aren't available in those versions
