For example, the Northern White Rhino is technically extinct. There are 2 of them left, both female, and they're too old to breed anyway.
But their DNA, and the DNA of the last male who died recently, is preserved.
Scientists plan to fertilize a blank egg with the DNA of the White Rhino, implant the egg into a closely related species of rhino, and bring them back.
But that's a difficult process, only works for animals who've recently gone extinct and have close relatives, and would leave only a small number of the revived species, so they'd effectively have to live in captivity forever.
