I can somewhat excuse Gamefreak during gen 2, because the games still needed to run on an original Game Boy. Despite it being possible, Crystal would have required quit ea bit of overhaul to take advantage of GBC-specific features.

I think people only care about graphics now because that was supposedly a reason for the dexcuts (which I personally don’t care about despite skipping this gen), while the “new” graphics for the Pokemon themselves genuinely don’t look that much different in-game, especially to casuals that are only gonna play for a few weeks at best

It doesn't look too bad but there's no real interaction in the fights beyond some flashy animations. The sprites barely even move. Crystal had better fights at least.

Simplistic yet non generic designs in both characters and over world have always been a cornerstone of Pokemon. It didn't. Pokemania as a fad was largely started by the TCG, not the games. The games weren't even available outside of Japan until over two years after the original Red and Green, it was the convergence of the TCG, games, and anime that got everyone whipped into a frenzy, but the TCG was the most important element. Once people realized it was just a card game and stopped caring Pokemania as a fad just started dying down, right around the time GSC came out in 2000. Pokemon didn't get its Thanksgiving Day Parade Balloon until 2001, so it's not like it wasn't popular, but there wasn't a furor like a few years prior.

Yeah no, in japan Mew itself was the cause of Pokemania because it was this big video game secret that everyone had to find out. In the west it would be the anime which came out about a week before the games if I remember right.
The TCG didn't come to the west until about three months after the games and by that point Pokemon had cemented its popularity.

The TGC wasn't really a big part of anything all things considered.

It got even worse with GBA and DS.

Compare Golden Sun and Golden Sun The Lost Age to RSE or FRLG. You suddenly realize how ugly Game Freak games look, and Golden Sun came out a whole year before Ruby/Sapphire.

It beat Pokemon on DS too. Hell, I'd even go as far as design is concerned, Dark Dawn on DS looked better than X/Y on 3DS. If it got an update and got upscaled to 3DS resolution, it would beat the shit out of 6th gen, and would be on par with 7th.

GF was never the best technically (far from it) but they at least offered an unique experience wrapped in a package that was technically par for the course.

Now they bring mediocrity wrapped in a package that usually isn't even tolerated from indie developers making $30 games.

when they announced the gba, one of the very first things they mentioned was that it would be fully backwards compatible with all gb/gbc games. plus, the gba didn't even come out until after crystal (except for in europe).

Actually he's right. That was the year of Napster and even a good chunk of my 10 year old friends were learning about roms because of it. I remember my one friend downloaded a ton of Japanese exclusive SNES games and we played Mega Man and Bass, the Gundam fighting games, and even Crystal in Japanese. It was really common place back then everyone was using Napster to download shit. You mostly heard about music from Napster but there was more. And then after that we had Limewire which served the same basic purpose of downloading shit easily.

Lufia is a GBC exclusive though. Crystal is a director's cut of a GBC Compatible game, which is itself designed to be share assets with a GB game.

It's unfair to consider the early games lazy, because they were labors of love. Everything else after is fair game.
