Nintendo is in full control of 3DS online, so it'll take a while, probably by the time the Switch successor has been out for a few years.

It could be a while. It could be next year. The 3ds is nearly 10 years old, but it also has 10 years worth of games and online stuff.
Heck for all we know, online for pokemon, like bank, could still be supported even after normal online is cut.

Probably not for a long time. Nintendo Wi-Fi stayed active until the company that hosted the servers was bought out and shut down. Nintendo is in full control of 3DS online because it's hosted in-house with their Nintendo Network service.

That wasn't really up to Nintendo. The company providing it went under and shut down their services for everyone using them. It's one thing to keep up a service you already have but it wasn't worth it to most of those companies to fuck around with transferring services for a now essentially dead game/system.
