Especially from gen 6 onward, the designs have seen a steady increase in waifu's, furbait, humanoids, objects, and baseless aliens. Aside from that, they've been getting increasingly cartoony. A common criticism is that they've started to look like toys, with giant "kawaii ugu" heads, gaudy textures, and tacked on features. They've become increasingly less believable as living creatures that one might encounter in the wild.
