Issue is it's cringe and immersion breaking (and yes immersion matters a lot in a RPG, this aint an arcade game).

why not allow fishing everywhere while mixing in hotspots/deadzones where youre more or less likely to have encounters?
I also sorely miss being able to cut the actual grass you could have encounters in but that's been gone a long time. Useful and fun interaction

You're wrong. Masuda already explained that the idea for the Wild Area came as a desire to experiment that kind of enviroment after they saw fans online begging for an Open World Pokemon.

He also said that they could've in theory decided to do a fully open world Pokemon game, but they prefer to test "normal game with one open world area" first because he has his doubts that an Open World Pokemon will be a good thing, so they'll gauge reactions to this gameplay mechanic experiment first.

I dunno, I've been playing DQ11 and it's a JRPG much like Pokemon, and at times, it feels like the walking is walking being done just for the sake of walking. I think Open World works great for a game like BOTW that is an action game with lots of unique physical engine mechanics.

But in Pokemon I do share Masuda's worry that an Open World will just mean 'what if a Pokemon game made you walk for 10 minutes between locations instead of just 4 minutes??". Hell the Wild Area already looks like shit to me precisely because it is exactly that, a place where you do all things you would be doing at Routes anyway except more time consuming.

A turned based open world game would suck and open world game play doesn't make every single game series "based". I personally don't think Pokemon would benefit at all with open world, BUT, I'd like to see them at least try and I don't blame them for just dipping their toe in. Sw/Sh could be good games that people are just shitting on without playing so let's see if this is actually successful or not.

Maps in JRPGs have always been mostly a padding tool. To me Pokemon wouldn't work as a BOTW like open world because of Pokemon themselves. People have this grand idea of Pokemon on the world map truly interacting with the wild but they don't account for the fact that such things are scripted and pre-planned. That kind of thing won't ultimately work for Pokemon. The reason Pokemon pop randomly out of the ground is LGPE and SS is because it makes it easier on the player to actually catch and farm what they need.

Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker 3 wasn't perfect by any means, but it's a monster catching/battling game in the same vein as Pokemon and managed to have overworld monsters that interacted with each other and the environment. Some monsters would "feed" upon others on the overworld to get a temporary power-up that carried over to battle, some monsters would fuse with each other on the overworld to take stronger forms, and some monsters would change into different monsters by walking on dangerous terrain. Why can't Pokemon do things like that?

I'd agree with you if DQM Joker had to deal with the sheer number of monsters Pokemons have, but even with the Natdex Cull, SwoShi already has more monsters confirmed now than DQM had.

I just don't see an open world game for Pokemon really being able to breath life of that kind into nearly 500 or more monsters in a well done way. At best, at best, I could see some monsters being programmed to do neat things like that, but definitely not all of them. I'd be find with that personally, having 50 or so guys doing dynamic animations in the wild while the other 450 just wander around like usual would be a fine compromise for me.

Because Pokemon is much much more competitive in nature and capturing is a massive focus. When you're hunting for a shiny or trying to get the perfect IV/EV/nature having only a select amount in an area at once is more of a pain for that stuff. It's nice for some games but for Pokemon it would just be a pain.

Imagine like BOTW. You climb the mountains and there's a huge Tyranitar stomping around the mountain. Every time you want to farm it for any reason you have to now go down the mountain, do whatever triggers reloading, and then climb all the way back. As it stands now though? You just run around in a circle for a few seconds and respawn.

I agree but I think for right now Gamefreak is far more focused on convinence then they are immersion. And that's not to say SS looks perfect or that I agree with the dexcut just that the method their using right now is more player friendly for online, friendly online, and general play and I think that's what they want from it.

I disagree, there's nothing convenient about being forced to fish in a specific spot or being barred from catching overpowered Pokemon. The points you're making would make sense if we ONLY had the Wild Area like BOTW is ONLY open world but since we know SWSH is split with a ton of normal routes and one wild area, there's no reason why they can't retain the classic grind-friendly mechanics on normal routes and go all out in the Wild Area.

There's nothing to say we actually can only fish in specific spots though and the wild area is the bulk of the game with routes being limited as far as we can tell. The anon here is drawing conclusions because of the dark spot but we've seen players fish in a variety of areas around the map so far and unlike rocks a dark spot like that is a little less clear. It looks to be a shitty ripple effect from the casting and lure.

We have been told in leaks that the sheep Pokemon can be seen rolling down hills and that the chipmunk is found in berry trees and will attack you if they're shaken, so who knows, maybe there are a handful of unique monster behaviours like that.

But we've seen the ripple effect in that one gif of Gyrados doing 90 degree turns so its not a fishing effect.
My initial response was that it was just signifying there was a rare Pokemon in that spot not unlike the shaking grass or dust clouds in BW but I doubt that now.

Christ, LGPE is more open than that, at least there once you have Cut/Fly/Surf you can challenge the gyms in any order (Their levels don't change, but at least they don't railroad you)
