Kids that liked Bulbasaur were straight up bullied at my elementary school (FRLG era), kids that liked Chikorita were made fun of at my middle school (HGSS era), kids that picked Fennekin were called furfags at my high school (XY era). During the RSE/DPPt/BWBW2 eras, nobody was really made fun of for their starter choices.

I was taking a piss in the restroom when I saw some 4th graders push one of my classmates into a stall and gave him a swirly with his Venusaur card. I got suspended with the 4th graders for standing there and not doing anything. When I came back, Pokemon was "banned" across all grades.

I was an anime only kid. I remember having VHSes of the giant pokemon episode and the S.S. anne sinking episode.
I remember one day a teacher bringing a bunch of these pokemon plastic disc collectables because her husband worked at like a cereal factory and had a bunch of these lying around (memory is fuzzy) and I remember spending recess trading these things. I still hold these memories fondly.
Also nobody really cared what starter you picked but the charmander kids were obnoxious.

OP here I chose Squirtle here I chose Squirtle because it was the second best option I liked Bulbasaur and Ivysaur the most but I didn't want to get picked on.
Also I didn't like Venusaur at all, and while I thought Blastoise wasn't as cool as Wartortle it was still better than Venusaur.
I didn't care about the Charmander line at all.

I was one of the kids who stole. My first experiences with pokemon was stealing pokemon red from a kid who stole my Mario world GB game. All my holo pokemon cards I literally stole.

During Pokemania my school actually played and watched nothing but Digimon, and I'm not saying it just to be a contrarian, it's what actually happened in my country. We played (and sometimes even bet) with tolas and tazos like there was no fucking tomorrow, it was great.
