Everyone in universe and out of universe knew Ash stood no chance through regular means, so he and Rowlet trained a bit before the match to learn Feather Dance as a counter.
The battle begins and Hau and Decidueye are clearly at an overwhelming advantage, tossing Rowlet around and using combos to leave Ash almost entirely helpless. Finally, Decidueye uses its Z-Move which should’ve defeated Rowlet but Rowlet was wearing a costume that it used to take the hit while it escaped. The battle kept going and Rowlet was still getting beaten, but it reached a stalemate when both Pokémon collided attacks. Decidueye got up before Rowlet who was visibly unconscious, so Nanu, who was acting as the referee, called the battle a win in Hau’s favor. >>40481126 revealed that Rowlet was just sleeping, so the battle continued, and even though Rowlet was still at a disadvantage, it managed to fully learn Feather Dance, that acted as a Substitute, so it could land the decisive blow and win Ash the match.
