By which metric? Incineroar is right now THE most viable Pokemon in VGC, and got in Smash Ultimate. Decidueye is an utter shitmon in both singles and doubles and doesn't even appear as a spirit in Smash.

Bulbasaur was always popular in Japan because the three starters were on equal footing marketing-wise. They each had a game, and they each had an equal spread of merchandise. In America though that wasn't true. Blastoise and Charizard outnumbered Venusaur greatly in every way that mattered and most kids preferred them. Bulbasaur himself was popular enough, but Venusaur held him back in most peoples eyes. Kids with Venusaur's always got shit on and they were few and far between. When FRLG was released though this kind of shifted and it's not really true anymore. All three Kanto starters have a decent fanbase now with Charizard outshining the other two a little but the old "Charizard vs Blastoise" debates of the past are effectively ancient history, and Bulbasaur has gained a lot of popularity from nostalgic hipsters because he's the "contrarian choice"

know something funny? when the d-arts pokemon figures came out charizard and blastoise both appreciated in value tremendously. They started around $40 and I remember off hand charizard ended up being about $260

venusaur is the only one that depreciated in value and was actually less expensive on the secondary market

Masuda said that they were considering to release Green Version to the west but they realized that color Blue is the opposite of color Red in the west, unlike Japan where it's Green.
They didn't mention anything about which starter is more marketable.

The models are not ugly. You probably saw the crappy renders but thats not how Pokemon look in the game (simplier colors and not shiny for no reason). Also, theyre animated very well and have lots of personality. GameFreak could learn a thing or two from Bamco.
