It requires for the pokémon to be coded to follow you in a way that's fitting, to walk on the right surfaces, take the right paths... Not to mention it's one more model to always have on screen, and we know how crap GF is when it comes to performances.
Not to mention it's such a pointless feature they probably just use it when they need a gimmick to promote a game.
