I don't disagree that Alola has areas you can optionally explore however, Ten Carat Hill is rather pathetic for a cave dungeon, Blush Mountain is almost certainly cut content just like the Kalos Power Plants on Route 13, Haina Desert is good though, would definitely put it on par with Desert Resort excluding the Relic Castle which is kind of why Desert Resort still wins, as for Hano Beach, that's also kind of small.

The thing with the areas you specified if they aren't that interesting, if you wanted a more interesting location go with the Hau'oli Cemetery or Mt. Hokulani. Thing is though that a lot of the optional areas in Gen VII just aren't very engaging, where there could be puzzles there aren't and most of them are very short, like take Hano Beach for example it's just a beach and some small islands, I think if they were to make it a true location they'd have a side cave that gives you an overview of the golf course or at least some sort of cliffside area to the north-east that had some rare Pokemon on it, then it'd be akin to Route 219-221 in terms of content.

Meanwhile in SM you can only rent a Lapras to splash in a small bay and you must take cutscene boats to go to other islands

They are very small optional areas. Ten Carat Hill is just a small tunnel with a small open area. And stuff like Blush Mountain, Hau’oli Graveyard, Malie Cape are just small single rooms with a few patches of grass and items. Is there really anything to explore? Haina Desert and Seaward Cave feel like the only decent dungeons because they require decent effort to go through

Because when you do actually progress the game you're hit over the head with numerous cut scenes and pointless tasks. Never before did I feel like the story is just a series of battles but thats what sun and moon is. I like the gen 7 pokemon, I think the routes in Alola are an improvement over Kalos, but this game has no replay value for me. I can replay Emerald/Platinum/BW2/FRLG hell even ORAS but this game seriously drains your patience.

Because when the people that hate Alola played the games they b-lined to every Rotem dex flag and never took time to explore and look around every route. Alola is small but it encourages exploration with TMs, items, and special grass spawns. Additionally there are optional areas, and the game frequently encourages you to take on each and every trainer on a route and sometimes that involves even more exploration. It's what every 3D region should strive to be.

desu I wonder if them doing Hoenn turned them off doing Water Routes proper ever again, I mean think about it, the Water Routes in subsequent generations have been progressively nerfed out of existence, Sinnoh was less than Kanto or Johto, Unova was about the same B2W2 being a bit of a saving grace in that regard, XY had basically Water Routes which were only half Water and Alola has one at best.

If they'd done water routes between the islands I think the safest bet would've been to make it an island-hopping sort of affair, tiny islands maybe some have houses, maybe a few have dungeons, most would just be spits of land with a few brushels, trees and some wild Pokemon on them. Have no Surf for Melemele still, just do the boat/surf trip to Akala but on Akala you get Lapras so it would allow the player to explore to Ula'Ula and Poni, have natural barriers blocking any progress into Poni and most of Ula'Ula.

Honestly as a kid most of my friends hated caves and water routes, myself included, and though I appreciate them now since I have patience I've always wondered if that was something they eventually listened to kids about. I see people on /vp/ often talk about loving them as kids but I don't think I had ever met another kid that didn't say it was their least favorite aspects of Pokemon when I was growing up.

Because you can't transfer them at all in SS. In SM you can bring over anything and use it but you won't get a dex entry, in SS you can't bring it over at all.

Water Meme was for ORAS not RSE, the issue I see with the Water Routes is that they're mostly generic and very large, fittingly they can be described as, vast as an ocean deep as a puddle. Not every Route needs to stand out but break up the ones that don't need to be generic here's what I'd have done for ORAS;

- Route 105 & Route 106 you add a bunch of little islands with the Explorer Trainer Class and what not on them, island hopping to compliment Island Cave and Dewford
- Route 108 turns into a ship graveyard, already has the Sea Mauville there you add in more sunken wreckage, maybe dive's needed to access some of them, perhaps some flotsam to break up the route's water and hide items that need the Itemfinder
- Route 125 I'd make a bit icy, particularly around Shoal Cave, really emphasize the environment, maybe have some bergs around the cave and have the entrance to shoal cave moved up high while adding holes in the side of the cave face that are sealed by ice during low tide and not during high tide.
- Route 127 Extend the mangroves out all across the route, have small banks of land where they grow and roots that you can climb across to reach otherwise inaccessible areas like on the top of the steep rocks.
- Route 128 Introduce a reef, maybe centralize it around the Seafloor Cavern since the idea is that it's a source of a Pokemon who has ties to the ancient world, you could even have the reef appear damaged as a result of the Legendary's actions.
- Route 132 & 133 I'd merge into a single Route and make Route 134 the new Route 133, for the new Route 132 make full use of the rapids, maybe have some ramps that you need to be riding rapids to go way over otherwise you just jump over them like the bike ramps in Gen IV, would add are bit more player control to exploring the Route, also only make the last bit one-way, as for the new Route 133 make it a shipdock area.

I think the problem with water routes and caves were the random encounters. On routes you have grass, and you have road. It's a balanced ecosystem. With caves and water routes it's practically all encounter tiles in addition to trainers. They're also both far bigger than traditional routes making the entire process really tedious for most people. Both also rarely offer any diversity in what you find so you're going through all these areas that have the same thing over and over again.

That's an issue with encounter rates, I agree they need to be toned down quite a bit and not just caves and water, high grass (the stuff on Route 119 and Unova Route 7) needs to all be toned down, encounters should be occurring no more frequently that 1 every 4-5 tiles and even then that should be the absolute most common not every single tile. However that's only half the issue, even just looking at the route from a visual standpoint the water routes blur together because they're boring. It's any wonder that Gen IV onwards slowly turned the regions from real places into theme parks for each of the major environments (volcano, ice, desert, jungle/forest, bald mountain, ocean, lake, grassland, canyon/badlands). Also for Caves and Water I'd put the encounter rate even lower if not just make it the rush mechanic from Gen VII, you know the one that's like Rustling Grass but the Pokemon attacks you, yeah do that, it'd actually make more sense in the water anyhow especially with Pokemon like Tentacool, Carvanha and whatnot swimming around.
