Nintendo delayed them(very severely in some cases) just to make sure the quality is up to snuff
Nintendo lives and dies by its prestige and reputation as game makers, if that takes a hit, they eat shit
Nintendo and Creatures have no direct control on the franchise's direction, that's what TPCI exists for, specifically because no one wanted or could deal with that load of work
Nintendo owns the majority of the IP, and the actual trademarks including the creatures, but again, the only thing they can do is say "You can't release that"
It's a nuclear button though, it'd require Nintendo to put Pokemon on ice and without Pokemon, GF would go bankrupt in a year, but the amount of legalese required would hurt everyone in the end (This is the reason GF's been desperately trying for another hit lately, they know they're fucked if Nintendo takes their ball and go home, and guess who has been buying their own stock and tightening the grip on their IPs these past few years)
Will they? I dunno, Nintendo's done wilder shit without issue
