it was a shiny new feature the old game didnt have meant to attract you into buying it, tricking you into thinking its worth it even though it doesnt make the game better.
thats a gimmick. that applies to mega evolution, z moves, and all that gigamax shit too.

It was introduced in gen 2, so it was introduced in one of the earlier games. It has different purposes, to get baby pokemon, to get certain moves on pokemon, to breed voor certain IV spreads. But you don't have to use it. Also I'm not >>40502975 but he does have a great point

it was literally the first thing they started showing of gen 2 in the anime, aside ho-oh. and togepi stays there the whole time.
imagine if they made a pokemon for the sole purpose of dynamax (maybe alcremie is this) and then had it as a main character in every episode of the anime for over a year before swsh came out. thats breeding/togepi.

The correct answer is: breeding is a mechanism because it was introduced early on in the franchise and has been developed since to fit in with newer generations to improve different aspects of the game
Z-moves are a gimmick since they were introduced in one generation abd dropped in the next generation. They also focused on only one aspect of the game. Do you understand it now?

Yes, there is some truth in this. I agree with the earlier statement that there is a thin line between gimmicks and mechanisms. But breeding is a mechanism according to al definitions
