1. this pic is not the busiest scene possible in the game. There can definitely be more monsters and characters at once. You'd know if you played the game.
2. I never said the combat is better (it is), my point is that having the players and monsters in the overworld fighting means they all need to be able to do more things, like switching behaviors, playing attack animations etc. which is obviously more computation-intensive than just having a battle trigger when you collide with a monster and load up a separate scene for the fight (which being turn based is also less intensive from a computation standpoint).
