They clearly started feeling the drain of 3D development, and now 3D HD development was gonna make their life even harder, so they decided to do the cut to make it easier for them.
Either way, the game LOOKS LIKE MOLTEN shit graphically, which means that even with the cut they're still having pathetic trouble with development, which means... barebones post-game, the end.
