It's the only game where all of the gym leaders actually DO something about the evil team. N is creepy, but if you want the ultimate edgelord, that would be Cyrus, who wants to reset the world to zero. Failing that Gladion, who looks the part but fails to play it.
You didn't NEED to play BW2 to get a good experience, but it helped.
