Watching the anime as a kid probably played a big part and influenced the idea of how a "Pokémon adventure" should be
I was one of those faggots that bought the game because of the anime and named the MC "Ash". I remember i even released my Butterfree just to mimic the anime during one of the countless runs of the game

This is honestly how it should be anyway. If they're not going to give every gym leader a full team, then just make the player choose which Pokemon on their team can fight, up to the number the gym uses.

I used to be like that but then I realized that it added another layer to the rivalry between the MC and whoever the rival in turn is. I had basically the same team as Barry the first time I played Pearl and that's how I got over it.

I used to be this way but in the last few years I let my starter lag behind the lead by a couple levels sometimes, especially if the top pokemon is something I recently caught

After the first couple of gyms I catch 4-8 of each new pokemon I want to include on my team and pick the best among those.

Kanto: Red; Blue; Leaf; Chase & Elaine

Johto: Krys/Lyra (As in Adventures they're the same in my Poketism); Ethan; Silver & Eusine

Hoenn: Brendan; May; Wally & Michael (He has a Pokemon from Colosseum with Wes-Rui OT)

Literally none of this for me. I have to actively try to keep myself from replacing my starter, and to keep it to par with the rest of my team. And I like using multiple Pokemon that share a type; monotype runs are fun.

I buy both or all three versions.

On my main version of each game/1st play through I always pick the fire starter.

After that, I'll do a "protagonist/ash ketchum/satoshi" play through in which I'll breed a team of max iv, good natured and ev trained pokemon at level 1. Send them over to my second copy or the third version (like one of usum).

Team will consist of that gens grass, fire and water starter. Then usually pikachu and then 2 other pokemon. Whatever I'm feeling. Last play through in UM rounded out the team with a gible and a riolu.

The iv and ev thing really only started happening in gen 6 and beyond. But the nature thing has been around since gen 3. Bit the starters and pikachu has been since gen 1.

Autism achieved.

Once I fill the dex slot for an evolution line if I know I'm never going to use it I catch and release because I feel bad having Pokemon sitting the the box unused this makes it harder than it needs to be to complete the dex in the next game

I've been doing it for years. The secret (and probably the actual autistic part) is that I'm always horny when I play, probably due to a lack of real social contact outside of my sister, so I always relied on Pokemon to be my friends, and I'd imagine them talking to me. Usually after a major in-game battle where one of my Pokemon excelled, I'll go to e621 and find some good solo art of that pokemon and masturbate while imagining I'm pleasuring and worshipping my Pokemon as a thank you. It really makes some of the battles infinitely more special.

One particularly memorable battle was a little after Platinum had just come out around when I was 13. I had just beat Cynthia's last Pokemon, her Lucario, with my Lucario, on my second third try. I was so happy that I had finally beaten her that I immediately rushed to the bathroom, locked the door, and went to e621 looking for some good Lucario art on my iPod touch. After a few minutes I found a really hot pic, started fapping, and had one of my best orgasms to this day. My legs started shaking and I couldn't see, but I assume it's because I closed my eyes so tight I didn't realize I was closing them, and I went deaf for about a minute? When I finally opened my eyes, my vision was blurry as hell and I could hear my mom knocking on the door asking if I was alright, so I now assume it's because I might've screamed or moaned. I was able to answer her back and clean myself up a bit before I made it back to my room and passed out on the floor right next to my bed. My knees just felt so weak.

When I woke up a couple hours later, my vision and hearing were back to normal, but my whole body ached as if I had just been running for an hour straight. Even walking back to the bathroom to take a leak was painful. I went back to my room and saw that I had never turned off my DS, so it was flashing red. I just cut it off, put it on the charger, and went back to sleep.

But yeah. It definitely makes battling way more special.

I always made it evolve before the first gym and after the third one. But that's probably because more than half of all my pokemon runs were Torchick in Emerald and Charmander in FireRed (they both learn moves good against rock types after evolving).
