I don't hate bulbasaur but I've never really wanted to include it in my playthroughs because of the other awesome grass types in the games it appears in. Same reason why I always pick chimchar in D/P games, there are tons of choices for grass and water types but there is only one other fire type before the postgame heatran

But in your logic, Squirtle is much worse because Blastoise is among the worst water types in Kanto and you have Lapras, Gyarados, Slowbro, Starmie, Cloyster and Tentacruel that have better stats, more moves and dual typing.
