I’m curious what this board wished what Samurott actually looked like. I don’t really mind it’s appearance but allot of people here are really upset about it that it hurts to read sometimes

It's not terrible, it just looks too clunky for the agile movements it's supposed to be able to make. People were probably expecting it to go harder on the samurai aspect and stay bipedal.

Or at least show of that he can move around on two legs like the anime did.
Most of his art just has him in his quadrupedal state so you wouldn't even know he could stand on two legs if didn't watch the anime.

Gen 5 starters could have been saved with a few simple changes

Serperior needed better stats it's the only starter I ever boxed because it couldn't keep up it's not nearly tankie anuff for it's moveset and tanks aren't fun for casual play anyway

Samurott: bipedal, go heavier on the shogun armour, uses its swords for animations, maybe a little more limb definition, chuck on fighting type and sacred sword

Emboar: design is mostly fine, maybe make the armour a little less garish, make the metal elements more obvious, maybe adding metal gauntlets/knuckle dusters, make it heavier and fire/steel for heat crash and heavy slam shenanigans

Serperior: design is mostly fine, make it a bit more reptilian and hairy in the face instead of uwu what's this, chuck on dragon type and a better physical movepool for coil sets like night slash/psycho cut, and draco meteor for contrarian sets

Samurott is a den mother to Serperior and Emboar.
The way I see him is he acts like a grandpa to Serperior and Emboar.
Making sure Serperior doesnt get too cocky heh (young one), and Emboar too fiery (late teen)

His role is really tough for a grandpa, but he genuinely cares for his family.

To another anon. He's like an aged samurai, he may not have that fire from when since but he is more a mentor and wants to live his own life on his own terms with
whatever time he has left.

And Samurott is unique because whether its had this "elderly personality" since it was an Oshawott or a Dewott or whether after experiencing life and evolution it
changes is a unique premise to say the least.

Just my two cents about it.

Honestly even Game Freak seems to have regrets about this Pokemon. It's stance and center of balance just doesn't make sense at all. Before it's current model it got kinda retconned several times trying to make sense out of it. There's even a game I think PokéPark where it's legs have knees facing foward.

The concept is brilliant, but the execution is so bad. It's a Shogun riding a horse, not just a bigger samurai. That's the progression, but I don't think they did a good job getting there. If it was me, I would have made it like an Otter/Shogun/Samurai Centaur so it's still quadrupedal, but has the required dexterity. Also, it should have been part fighting.

That would fuck up the otter elements even more and you would need to make the upper body very humanoid, which would look very uncanny. Samurott barely looks like a giant otter to begin with.

Honestly, Samurott would have been fine if it worked more like Zacian, using a sword in its mouth. As it is it just doesn't make a lot of sense for it to be a quadruped if it has to stand on its hind legs to make use of its gimmick anyway. It's similar to how Blastoise has to get on all fours to aim and fire its cannons. Why wouldn't it be on all fours all the time? If Samurott has to stand to use its swords it should stand all the time. If its going to be on all fours most of the time it should be able to use its swords in that position. As it is it's just a disjointed design that doesn't make much mechanical sense. Make it one or the other, trying to split it both ways just makes it feel lazy.

I feel like the samurai theme should be toned down and it should give up on dual wielding altogether and focus more on being an amphibious war mount. Full body covered in pointy shell armor, large webbed claws Instead of flippers and a long otter tail covered in sharp shells that can be used as a whip. A beast that doesn't need to hold weapons because it could gorge you, maul you, bite your head off or bisect you with its tail.
