>>40532840If you're talking about the 18 gyms thing, no, they definitely didn't lie. The exact quote:
>From an actual gameplay and experience perspective, there will be certain gym leaders that will be different depending on which version you’ve played. In terms of the setting itself, the background to the story is there’s like this Japanese-style J-1 and J-2, like minor league and major league kind of concept. There are 18 different types of gyms in the story, and depending on the version, which gyms are in the minor league and which gyms are in the major league are different. For example, in Sword, the fighting-type gym will be in the major league, but in Shield, the ghost type. The idea is that every year, the Galar region is playing and which gyms make it into the minor league versus the major league changes. Was it lazy and irresponsible to claim there are 18 gyms without clarifying that only 8 of them could be challenged? Yes. Was it a lie? No. There ARE 18 gyms. A gym's existence isn't contingent on being able to be challenged.
>b-but they obviously wanted people to think they could battle all 18Yes, that's why they immediately corrected the misinterpretation and killed the hype. Sure. Never attribute to malice that which is adequately explained by stupidity. Game Freak wasn't lying, they were just too dumb to realize the obvious conclusion people would jump to when they heard "18 gyms (in lore)". Also they already told us there would be 8 gyms months ago, but people ignored it because it seemed obvious at the time.
