Just going by memory, Caterpie was describing its desire to evolve. Pikachu probably started realizing that he didn't want to evolve.

I remember the scene from Pokemon Island where Bulbasaur, Charmander, Squirtle, Pikachu, Meowth, Ekans, and Koffing all formed a pack to find their friends and Ekans and Koffing are so loyal to Jesse and James that the mere idea of Team Rocket leaving them behind horrifies them

It really makes the difference come Gen 3 where Jesse and James finally let Arbok and Weezing go after being with them for so long to go be with their own tribe.

That sounds important because it was when before Ash hopped aboard the SS Anne that he challenged Serge to a battle and after having his ass handed to him is when he gives Pikachu the Thunder Stone and Pikachu finds the mere idea of it insulting

Because Raichu is garbage. Why else do you think Pikachu has its own Z-Crystal and Light Ball

It has its own Z-crystal because they are always going to give the mascot special things and it got the Light Ball because pikachu has horrible stats and they wanted the mascot a way to be useful in battle. (instead of just fixing the bad stats for some reason)
